On Saturday, September 12, 2009 there was a peaceful, conservative march on Washington DC. I was blessed and fortunate enough to be able to attend this event and was amazed
at how many people were there, people of every race and color and of every party affiliation. There were
young people, old people, and families with children of all ages; mothers, fathers, grandparents, and neighbors.
Most were smiling and jovial, happy and proud to be there.
I am an ordinary, hard working America. I pay my taxes, support my local community, and aside from the fact that I vote
come election time, I have never, ever been to a protest of any sort, until now. I know and believe that
I represent a very large segment of American people.
The
March was to start at 11:30 am, beginning at the Freedom Plaza near the White House. My group and I arrived in DC about 9:30 am and discovered that the march had
already begun! It seems that Freedom Plaza had overflowed its capacity and for safety concerns the Police ordered the march to begin early.
The atmosphere was one of a very large family gathering. Yes, there were a few extremist
carrying rude or otherwise inappropriate signs but believe me, they were very few in context to the sea of other Americans
that were there.
There
were so many people participating that the small group I came with had to locate ourselves far behind the reflecting pool
of the capital building across the street from what is called the Mall area which was also rapidly filling up with those that
came in behind us. All of us were so pleased, honored and humbled to take part in this incredible event.
At one point I left my group to locate a bathroom. There
were dozens of port-a-potties and I still had to stand in line for almost an hour. I then decided to walk
around among the throngs of people and work my way closer to the stage. I never did even see it! The effort
was like a dance; weaving, twisting and turning, ducking down at times, making my way through this mass of American
humanity, listening to the speaker’s, watching the people, taking photos and videos…it took me another hour to
finally get back to where my group was. It was amazing, simply amazing.
I’ve heard a lot of name calling since returning home…the media and the politicians don’t
really know what to collectively call us…they don’t know because they have never heard from us before…they
don’t know us because we are the “silent majority” that is silent no more and this is the
first time we have gotten together to speak out and make our voices heard.
I didn't vote for our President but I was proud that we had finally elected a "black-American"
President, very proud that we had come so far since the days of Rosa Parks, an American hero for standing up for freedom.
I am still proud that we have reached this point. I, like many others just don’t
agree with most of the current administrations policies and the agenda they are trying to acomplish; the rapid growth of the
government, the massive out of control spending and the interference in our personal lives and with our constitutionally protected
rights as citizens of this wonderful and great nation and with our belief that all men and women everywhere are endowed,
by our Creator, with certain inalienable rights.
I traveled
to Washington
DC from
Texas with
two of my neighbors and a friend of theirs; a journey that took almost 30 hours, each way, given that we were pulling
a 35 foot horse trailer with a camper in order that we could camp in Virginia and take the metro into DC for the march on Saturday. The
four of us, like almost everyone else that participated in this empowering event, are not some fringe, right winged, nut bags,
we are simply exercising our rights, as Americans, to peacefully dissent and to protest certain issues we hold in contention with
our elected Representatives who are not listening to us... why should we not protest this massive, out of
control spending that is strapping our children and grandchildren with such massive debt it will be impossible to repay? Right
now we borrow money just to pay the interest on money we have already borrowed! Insanity!
We need and want less government in our lives, not more and for our government to stop spending so
much of our hard earned money. We want and indeed, demand to have the Constitution respected and adhered
to by the members of our government and more than anything we absolutely insist on the corruption in Washington to stop. We
want term limits for the members of the congress and the senate and transparency in our government without compromising or
endangering our nation's security.
As our elected officials
if you can’t do these things then we will fire you and seek out those representatives
that can do and are willing to do these things…not because we have asked but because they too espouse and believe these
fundamental principals are the foundation of our country's security and are essential for our nation’s heath and prosperity
and for its peoples.
Whenever the foundation
of any institution is undermined it will fail. Is failure and bankruptcy what we hope to pass on to future
generations of Americans? Indeed, will we even be able to survive as a free nation without upholding and
defending these fundamental principals?
That is why I went
to Washington using my own money and a little bit of money given to me by a few people that would have liked to go and couldn’t.
I went with a hand made sign that read "Without Freedom We Have Nothing". That is what I believe. I
have seen many of our freedoms slip away while we were "sleeping". We, the no longer silent majority,
are awake now and we are a growing force to be reckoned with.
We,
the no longer silent majority, are not of any particular party. We are comprised of every
party affiliation and even of no party affiliation; I do warn you, Democrats and Republicans those of you that may be thinking
that you can just align yourselves with us and get elected using our votes you have another thing coming. To gain our votes
you must earn our trust and demonstrate a true belief in the principals we espouse, with honor and dignity.
Furthermore, I am dismayed that there is an effort "out there"
that is dividing America more than ever along lines of color. We are one people, one nation; we are Americans...that is the only name
we should use in reference to ourselves and each other. Fostering racial hatred is despicable and not acceptable no matter
how it may be disguised.
There are some
wonderful photographs available on the internet taken by much better vantatge points than I had so I will only place
a small amount here as some of you are limited by bandwidth size to receive photos,
